Solve for p by simplifying both sides of the equation, then isolating the variable.

p = -8

9-5p = -7 -7p+9-9

combine like terms (+9-9=0)

9-5p = -7 -7p

add 7p to both sides

9+2p = -7

subtract 9 from both sides

2p = -16

divide by 2 on both sides

p = -8
