Transportation made it so people could travel back to the main civilization with more convenience/

The settlement of the great plains was slow due to its inconvenience and the vast ammount of land avalible. Also, people were going to california in search for gold.

People have been migrating to the south due to warmer temperatures and proximity to the ocean.
