|x+2| - 3 = 9

Option 1:

x + 2 - 3 = 9

x - 1 = 9 add 1

x = 9 + 1

x = 10

Option 2:

-(x+2) - 3 = 9 Distribute "-" through the parenthesis

-x - 2 - 3 = 9

-x - 5 = 9 Add 5

-x = 9 + 5

-x = 14 Multiply by -1

x = -14
