c=number o cats

d=number o dogs

has 9 fewer dogs than cats means c-9=d

has total o 15 dogs, so find cats

if d=15

c-9=15

add 9 to both sides

c=24

24 cats

The answer is 24 cats. They way you get the answer is since there is 9 fewer dogs than cats in the shelter and there are 15 dogs you would add the 9 to the 15 to get the total amount of cats. Hope this helps
