In the novel Incidents in the life of a slave girl by Harriet Ann Jacobs, the protagonist Linda Brent is characterized by her stubbornness and bravery as she refuses to give in to the pressures placed on her by both society and her Master, Dr. Flint. Throughout the novel, she consistently persists to disregard Dr. Flint's sexual advances towards her as she even goes so far as to hide inside of her own house for seven years. Most people would give into the societal pressure of servitude, but Linda is a stubborn and strong African American slave who takes control of her own destiny.
