following system of equations.
-10x + 2y = 20 AND y = 3x + 2

Given the 2 equations

- 10x + 2y = 20 → (1)

y = 3x + 2 → (2)

Substitute y 3x + 2 into (1)

- 10x + 2(3x + 2) = 20 ← distribute parenthesis and simplify left side

- 10x + 6x + 4 = 20

- 4x + 4 = 20 ( subtract 4 from both sides )

- 4x = 16 ( divide both sides by - 4 )

x = - 4

Substitute x = - 4 into (2) for corresponding value of y

y = 3(- 4) + 2 = - 12 + 2 = - 10

solution is (- 4, - 10 )
