What are natural causes of earthquakes that is what are the tectonic features and actions that result in seismic waves?

I know that if there was an earthquake (oceanic plates moving) in the sea there would be a force outward from the centrepoint and the ripples out would get bigger and bigger the smaller waves behind the first is like fuel and cause a tsunami.
