One brother has saved $31.50 and the other saved $53.50

Because The difference of those two numbers is 22

So 31.50+53.50=85

Let the two brothers be: x and y

Their combined savings is $85: x + y = 85

One brother (x), has $22 more than the other (y): x = 22 + y

Plug in 22 + y for x in the first equation

(22 + y) + y = 85

Combine like terms

2y + 22 = 85

Note the equal sign. What you do to one side, you do to the other. Do the opposite of PEMDAS.

2y + 22 (-22) = 85 (-22)

2y = 85 - 22

2y = 63

Isolate the y. Divide 2 from both sides

2y/2 = 63/2

y = 63/2

y = 31.5

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Plug in 31.5 for y in one of the equations

x = 22 + y

x = 22 + (31.5)

x = 53.5

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One brother made $53.50, and the other made $31.50

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

hope this helps
