The pattern goes 8 light then 2 dark, so there are 10 in one cycle of the pattern before it repeats.
40/10=4
The pattern repeats 4 times.
If there are 8 dark ones every patter cycle, then 4x8=32 are dark paintings out of the 40 in total.
