A manager with a Theory X orientation will most likely rely on coercive methods to motivate workers such as punishments and threats. There are two different types of management theories: Theory X and Theory Y. A Theory X manager would likely be authoritative with those they manage due to their lack of motivation. When a manager perceives there to be little or no motivation coming from their workers, they are more likely to be stern and use punishment as a way to get them to do what they want. By pushing them hard, it makes them realize the manager means what they say and they need to complete their work.
