During the colonial period, the british citizens expected to enjoy:

Cheap labour force- When they colonized a country or a place, the manufacturers and bourgeosiels would move the factories to the colony and had the locals work for them with little payings. If the factory was set back in Britian, the manufacturers would have to pay for a much higher wage for their citizens.

Raw materials- The british citizens would explore the place and find the raw materials that could be used. For example, coal fields were set up in the colonies to obtain coals.

Hope it helps!
