L +T = 8

2L -T = 1

Explanation:

Let, L = lions, and T = Tigress

"total of 8 lions and tigers" → L+T = 8

"The number of tigers is one less than twice the number of lions."→

T = -1 + 2L

T= -1 +2L , subtract T and add 1 to both sides

T-T +1 = -1+1 +2L -T, combine like terms

1 = 2L -T

System of equations that represents the number of lions and tigers.
