Simplify. Combine like terms

3 + x + 1 = 2

x + 4 = 2

Note the equal sign. What you do to one side, you do to the other. Isolate the x. Subtract 4 from both sides

x + 4 (-4) = 2 (-4)

x = 2 - 4

Simplify

x = -2

-2 is your answer for x

hope this helps
