Let the number be 'x'

According to the question,

A number is added to 15 less than 3 times itself.

So, x + (15 less than 3 times itself)

15 less than 3 times itself =
3x - 15

Now, x + (15 less than 3 times itself) =
x + (3x-15)

We get the result as 101.

So,
x+ 3x-15 = 101

4x - 15 = 101

Therefore, it is the required equation used to evaluate the number 'x'.
