Non-violence is the personal practice of being harmless, less aggressive, and less violent under all conditions which may include violence. Gandhi, under religious beliefs, used being harmless to take mass action against the British from the colonial rule to discrimination because of race. Gandhi taught that being non-violent is a weapon not used for the weak because not a lot of people can handle it, and where everyone can use it for good.
