For ten months General Ulysses Grant, commander-in-chief of the Unionist troops, tried unsuccessfully to infiltrate the city. After General Robert Lee, commander of the Confederate forces, made a desperate attack on Fort Stedman on the union-dominated front on March 25, Grant prepared for a major offensive. He invaded Five Forks on April 1, crushing Lee's rearguard southwest of Petersburg. On April 2, the "yankees" (name given to Union soldiers) attack across the enemy-ridden line in Petersburg, and the Confederates are defeated.
