Timothy gets a phone call from some of his friends. They say they will be at the library in 15 min and ask him to meet them there. He decides to walk to the library which is three fourths mi away. He walks at a steady speed of 2 and one fourth mi divided by h. Will he get there before his friends? Use pencil and paper. Describe three ways you could solve this problem.

Given, Timothy decides to walk to the library which is
(3)/(4) miles away.

His speed is
2(1)/(4) miles per hour.

First we will con vert this mixed fraction to improper fraction.

2(1)/(4) =((2)(4)+1)/(4) =(8+1)/(4) =(9)/(4)

We know that 1 hour = 60 minutes.

So Timothy covers
(9)/(4) miles in 60 minutes

He covers 1 miles in
(60)/(((9)/(4) )) minutes

He covers
(3)/(4) miles in
((60)/(((9)/(4) ))) ((3)/(4)) =
(((60)(4))/(9)) ((3)/(4)) ( As when we divide fractions we will multiply the reciprocal of it)

=
((240)/(9)) ((3)/(4))

=
((240)(3))/((9)(4))

=
(720)/(36)

=
20

So it will take Timothy 20 minutes to walk to his friends.

But his friends will be in the library in 15 minutes.

So he will not get there before his friends.

We have got the required answer here.
