Ibn Rushd's was an Andalusian philosopher and doctor of Berber origin, master of philosophy and Islamic laws, mathematics, astronomy and medicine.

In addition to developing a medical encyclopedia, he wrote comments on Aristotle's work; hence he was known as "the Commenter." In his work Refutation of the refutation (Tahafut al-tahafut) he defends Aristotelian philosophy against Al-Ghazali's claims that philosophy would be in contradiction with religion and would therefore be an affront to the teachings of Islam. His writings influenced the Christian thought of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
