(x) + (x - 20) = 90

Combine like terms.

2x - 20 = 90

Add 20 to both sides.

2x = 110

Divide both sides by 2.

x = 55

Plug 55 for x in "Complement 2" (see top for reference).

(55) - 20 = 35

Your answer is: 35

Complementary angles add up to 90 degrees.

  1. Complement 1: x
  2. Complement 2: x - 20 (angle we're trying to find)

Make them add up to 90 in an equation.

(x) + (x - 20) = 90

  • Combine like terms.

2x - 20 = 90

  • Add 20 to both sides.

2x = 110

  • Divide both sides by 2.

x = 55

  • Plug 55 for x in "Complement 2" (see top for reference).

(55) - 20 = 35

  • Your answer is:

35
