Reread Lilian Moore's "Until I Saw the Sea" and Wordsworth's "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud."

Until I saw the sea
I did not know
that wind
could wrinkle water so.

I never knew
that sun
could splinter a whole sea of blue.

Nor
did I know before
a sea breathes in and out
upon a shore.

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o’er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,—
A host of golden daffodils
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the Milky Way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I, at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced, but they
Outdid the sparkling waves in glee;
A poet could not but be gay
In such a jocund company;
I gazed—and gazed—but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought.

For oft, when on my couch I lie,
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.

Final answer:

The mood of Lilian Moore poem is one of discovery and wonder, while the mood of Wordsworth's poem is one of joy and tranquility. Both poets use figurative language to create meaning in their poems.

Step-by-step explanation:

Mood of each poem:

The mood of Lilian Moore's poem 'Until I Saw the Sea' is one of discovery and wonder. The speaker expresses a sense of amazement at the power of nature, as they describe how the sight of the sea and its interactions with the wind and sunlight have brought about a newfound understanding. In contrast, the mood of Wordsworth's poem 'I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud' is one of joy and tranquility. The speaker describes a moment of unexpected beauty and takes pleasure in the company of the daffodils.

Figurative language:

In 'Until I Saw the Sea,' Moore uses figurative language to create meaning by describing the wind as capable of 'wrinkling water' and the sun as able to 'splinter a whole sea of blue.' These metaphors emphasize the power and impact of natural elements on water. In 'I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud,' Wordsworth uses personification to give the daffodils and waves human characteristics, such as 'tossing their heads in sprightly dance.' This personification enhances the imagery and creates a sense of liveliness and movement.
