Here Abraham Lincoln speaks about working hard for achieving peace within the nation's boundaries and with other countries. He wants to "achieve and cherish" this peace, we know that achieve means to carry something out succesfully so all this work and effort is going to bring people to peace. But there is something about peace that is very important to take into consideration. Peace is not something that maintains by itself, it has to be constantly reinforzed. This is what Abraham Lincoln refers to when using the word "cherish", he means that peace needs to be cultivated with care or affection. There are a lot factors that will successfully keep peace, people need to understand that it is not a one time job, constant maintenance is required.
