4 + 2(1 + x) = 12

Distribute 2 inside the parentheses.

4 + 2 + 2x = 12

Combine like terms.

6 + 2x = 12

Subtract 6 from both sides.

2x = 6

Divide both sides by 2.

\boxed {x =3}
