First change both fractions so that they will have a common denominator. The greatest common factor of both denominators, 5 and 9, is 45. Therefore, 45 will be your new common denominator.

Now change both fractions:

(2 * 9)/(5 * 9) = (18)/(45)

(8 * 5)/(9 * 5) = (40)/(45)

Now add the 2 new fractions:

(18)/(45) + (40)/(45) = (58)/(45) \rightarrow 1 (13)/(45)

Your answer is
1 (13)/(45)
