He urged the United States to comply with the provisions of the Declaration of Independence, the Emancipation Proclamation and the Constitution. He is known for his struggle for racial equality, peaceful non-violent protests, workers' rights of blacks and protests against the Vietnam War in his late years. He was assassinated on April 4, 1968. in Memphis, Tennessee.
