The recognition of harmonious coexistence of diverse cultural groups in a society is called multiculturalism.
Multiculturalism makes reference to the co-existence of different cultures, that is to say the co-existence of different religions, customs, ethnic groups and ideologies, within the same nation. The idea of multiculturalism implies that individuals do not need to give up their cultural identities in order to share a dialogue with other individuals that do not have the same cultural values because all cultures are unique and special. 'Cultural pluralism' can function as a synonym of 'multiculturalism'.
