After world war II why did the USSSR want t comtrol in eastern europe

correct me if im wrong but Josef Stalin purged his own country into famine and used to many resources during ww2( he ended up losing 20 million USSR citizens and military personnel) when he took over Poland and other country's (or states) i think he wanted to spread socialism or something like that.

They wanted friendly countries, so that they would be safe from invasion. There was a deep fear of communism in the states.
