Behind all the sentences and misconceptions, this really is just a simple addition problem. The problem is asking us to add the two fractions, or widths together, to calculate the total width or thickness as they phrase it.

5/16 + 7/8 = 5/16 + 14/16 = 19/16 which simplifies to 1 3/16 as a mixed fraction.
