Charles De Gaulle warned Kennedy that Vietnam and warfare in Vietnam would trap America in a “bottomless military and political swamp.
The advise from the french president predicted a bottomless battle, a perpetual one which would suck the USA, into a lethal conflict. Kennedy ignored his advise, which was based on the French experience in the war of independence in Vietnam. The USA leader relied on hawks who opined that the USA would be well prepared for the battle and that the south only needed a few assistance from the USA. This was wrong, becasue years later, his successor had to add more than 650,000 soldiers into the country, in what proved to be an expensive war, which the USA public was not prepared for.
