The pioneers brought with them diseases such as small pox which adversely affected the native populations. It is estimated that these infectious diseases contributed to the reduction of native American populations. In addition, the native Indians way of life was also severely affected as they were pushed into reserves, their land alienated, and the sociopolitical structures severely disturbed.
