The number of VHS movie rentals has declined since the year 2000 due to the popularity of DVDs, as the following table shows. Use a graphing calculator to determine the exponential regression equation that best fits the VHS rental data. Let x represent the number of years since 2000.

Year
2000
2001
2002
2003
2004
2005
2006
VHS Rentals (in millions)
10.5
7.8
6.3
5.1
4.4

We must do is to graph the following ordered pairs in the Cartesian plane:
Year VHS Rentals (in millions)
2000 10.5
2001 7.8
2002 6.3
2003 5.1
2004 4.4
2005 3.6
2006 3.1
Then, we must observe the behavior of the graph, to determine if the function is linear or exponential.
For this case, we observe that the trend is a decreasing exponential function, since, the rate of change of the function is not constant.
Answer:
Exponential function
