How does a seatbelt help to prevent your inertia from carrying you into the windsheild in an accident?

The seat belt can be a protection in order to prevent an injury in case of a car crash by reducing the body's velocity when there is a sudden decrease in the speed. Due to inertia the passenger will continue to travel forward once there is a sudden stop, this is because the car and passenger's velocities are independent.
