You need to subtract 3 and then divide by 2, then add the 3 back to one side.

19 Awards to movies T and G.
T has 3 more than G, we know that.
That leaves us with 16 awards left.
16 over 2 is 8.

Gone with the Wind has 8 awards, and Titanic has 3 more than that, so 11.

That makes 19 total.

let:

Titanic = t
Gone with the wind = g

Combined, the two movies earned 19 academic awards

t + g = 19

Titanic won 3 more awards than gone with the wind

t = g + 3

The two equations are:

t + g = 19
t = g + 3

Plug in "g + 3" into "t"

(g + 3) + g = 19

Simplify, combine like terms

3 + g + g = 19

2g + 3 = 19

Isolate the g, subtract 3 from both sides (do the opposite of PEMDAS)

2g + 3 (-3) = 19 (-3)

2g = 19 - 3

2g = 16

2g/2 = 16/2

g = 16/2

g = 8

Gone with the Wind earned 8 awards.

Plug in 8 for g in one of the equations.

t + g = 19
t + 8 = 19

isolate the t, subtract 8 from both sides

t + 8 (-8) = 19 (-8)

t = 19 - 8

t = 11

Titanic earned 11 awards

hope this helps!
