There is a small flap at the back of your throat called the epiglottis. When you swallow the epiglottis closes to cover the trachea and food/ water passes through the esophagus into the stomach. Normal breathing is interrupted because while you are swallowing, your airway/trachea is temporarily sealed by your epiglottis.
