The novel, Number the Stars, centers around a girl whose friend is Jewish. It takes place during WWII when the Nazis were invading and gaining control of Europe. It is important to know the historical context of this novel as it helps the reader understand what is going on and how dire the situation was. The novel itself does not specifically state what is going on or who is in control, it is up to the reader to find out and interpret the situation at hand. For example, the main character and her Jewish friend stumble upon a Nazi soldier at one point. The Jewish girl is frightened and stands still, while her friend speaks to the soldier. If one knows about the historical context of the situation, then one can easily understand what is happening in this confrontation. The author, Lois Lowry, had written this novel in honor of her Jewish friend who lived in Denmark when the Nazis invaded Europe. Knowing the historical background of the author and her view towards the situation, the reader can better understand the situation that is being presented in the novel. The Nazis held Jews in concentration camps, killing a large number of them by the end of WWII. By knowing the dire consequences of such a situation, one can better understand the novel and the historical context behind it.

Albert Chinualumogu Achebe was born on November 16, 1930, in Ogidi, a large village in Nigeria. Although he was the child of a Protestant missionary and received his early education in English, his upbringing was multicultural, as the inhabitants of Ogidi still lived according to many aspects of traditional Igbo (formerly written as Ibo) culture. Achebe attended the Government College in Umuahia from 1944 to 1947. He graduated from University College, Ibadan, in 1953. While he was in college, Achebe studied history and theology. He also developed his interest in indigenous Nigerian cultures, and he rejected his Christian name, Albert, for his indigenous one, Chinua.

In the 1950s, Achebe was one of the founders of a Nigerian literary movement that drew upon the traditional oral culture of its indigenous peoples. In 1959, he published Things Fall Apart as a response to novels, such as Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, that treat Africa as a primordial and cultureless foil for Europe. Tired of reading white men’s accounts of how primitive, socially backward, and, most important, language-less native Africans were, Achebe sought to convey a fuller understanding of one African culture and, in so doing, give voice to an underrepresented and exploited colonial subject.
