John is filling a bathtub that is 18 inches deep. He notices that it takes two minutes to fill the tub with three inches of water. He estimates it will take 10 more minutes for the water to reach the top of the tub if it continues at the same rate. Is he correct?

Answer:

Yes. John is correct

Explanation:

If it takes 2 minutes to fill the tub with 3 inches of water then the rate of fill = 3/2 inches per minute

If 3 inches are filled already, then 15 more inches need to be filled

Time taken to fill 15 inches = 15/(3/2) = (15 x 2 )/3 = 10 minutes
