replace a and b with their number value:

2a^2 + 5b = 2(3)^2 +5(4)
do the 3^2 first: 3^2 = 9
so now you have 2(9) +5(4)
now multiply both sets of numbers: 2 x 9 = 18 and 5 x 4 = 20
now add them:

18 +20 = 38
