What is the solution to this addition sentence? 3/4 + (-1/2) = _____

Answer: 1/4

Step 1: Find a common denominator

To add fractions across, both numbers need to have a common denominator.

Since four is a multiple of two, let’s turn -1/2 into -2/4

Step 2: Add across

3/4 + -2/4 = 1/4

1/2 is the same as 2/4.
when you add a negative it’s the same as subtraction. Basically this equation is 3/4 - 2/4 = 1/4.
