Answer:

14 pounds of strawberries and 42 pounds of peaches are sold

Explanation:

Suppose the pounds of strawberries sold are x and pounds of peaches sold are y. then

$182= x(1) + y(4)--------A

or 182= x(1) +3x(4)------- B

182=x+12x

182/13=x

x=14

Answer: the number of pounds of strawberries sold is 14 pounds and the number of pounds of peaches sold is 42 pounds

Explanation:

Let x represent the number of pounds of strawberries sold.

Let y represent the number of pounds of peaches sold.

Amelia sold 3 times as many pounds of peaches as pounds of strawberries. This means that

y = 3x

Each pound of strawberries sells for $1 and each pound of peaches sells for $4. She made $182 altogether. This means that

x + 4y = 182 - - - - - - - - - - 1

Substituting y = 3x into equation 1, it becomes

x + 4×3x = 182

x + 12x = 182

13x = 182

x = 182/13 = 14

y = 3x = 3×14 = 42
