In the middle of the afternoon, the temperature outside was 0 °F. An hour later, the temperature had decreased by 12 °F. An hour after that, the temperature had decreased by another 4 °F. What increase in temperature is needed to return to the original temperature of 0 °F?

Given:

The initial temperature of the outside is 0 °F.

Decrease in the temperature in the first hour = 12 °F

Therefore, temperature after 1 hour = 0 - 12 = -12 °F

Now, decrease in the temperature in the second hour = 4 °F

Therefore, temperature after 2 hours = -12 - 4 = -16 °F

Let 'x' °F be added to the final temperature in order to bring it to 0 °F.

Therefore,


x+(-16)=0

Adding 16 on both sides, we get:
