A runner’s goal is to complete a mile in 4 minutes or less. The runner’s speed is 20 feet per second. Does the runner meet the goal? Explain.

Answer:

No, the runner will not reach the goal in 4 minutes.

Explanation:

There are 5280 feet in one mile, the runner is going at 20 feet a second so that accounts for 1200 feet a minute,

if we multiply 1200 by 4 we get 4800, which is less then 5280, as a result the runner will not have run enough feet in 4 minutes to get a mile.
