This equation is already formatted nicely for us, telling us exactly what y represents.

Let's plug in the y = equation into the other one.

4x + 3y = 24 turns into....

4x + 3(3x - 5) = 24

Distribute here.

4x + 9x - 15 = 24

Simplify.

13x - 15 = 24

Again.

13x = 39

More....

x = 13

Ta-da! We now know our x value. Now, plug it into the y = equation.

y = 3x -5 turns into....

y = 3(13) - 5

Distribute.

y = 39 - 5

Simplify.

y = 34

And there's the y value. You can check by plugging them in again or by sticking the two equations into a graphing calculator like Desmos and checking the intersection point, but my fingers are cramping a bit.
