A linear equation is an equation that represents a line. A linear equation has a variable raised to the 1st power.

For example, Y = 2x, Y = x + 1, Y = 8x - 3 are examples of linear equations.

However, something like
Y =(4)/(x) and
Y = 6^(x) seem to have a variable raised to the 1st power, but they're not linear.
