Two planes simultaneously left the Washington and LA and headed towards each other. The distance between the cities is 2700 miles. After they flied for 2 hours, they have not met each other yet, and distance between them was still 500 miles. What is the speed of each plane, if the one from LA was 100 mph faster?

Answer:

Washington plane = 500 mph

LA plane = 600 mph

Explanation:

Speed of Washington plane(mph) = w

Speed of LA plane(mph) = w + 100

2700 - 2(w + w + 100) = 500

2700 - 2(2w + 100) = 500

2200 - 4w - 200 = 0

4w + 200 = 2200

4w = 2000

w = 500

w + 100 = 600
