An incoming MBA student took placement exams in economics and mathematics. In​ economics, she scored 85 and in math 86. The overall results on the economics exam had a mean of 72 and a standard deviation of 8​, while the mean math score was 65​, with a standard deviation of 10. On which exam did she do better compared with the other​ students?

Let X be the score in economics and Y be in Maths.

Overall X is N(72,8) while Y is N(65,10)

To compare both we convert both these scores to z scores


Z=(85-72)/(8) =1.625 in Economic

In maths


(86-65)/(10) =2.1

Since z score is higher for Math, she did better in maths compared with other students than in economics.
