Multiplying by the conjugate (which you should pretty much always do to simplify), we get

(3-2sqrt2)/((3+2srqt)(3-2sqrt2))

which is

(3-2sqrt2)/(9-8) = 3-2sqrt2.

Therefore p + 1/p = 3+2sqrt2 + 3 - 2sqrt2 = 6
