PLEASE HELP ASAP

A community center serves a large Thanksgiving dinner for people in need. 100 people attend the dinner, and 80 pounds of turkey are eaten. The organizers estimate that each adult eats 1 pound of turkey and each child eats 1/2 pound of turkey. How many adults and how many children attended the dinner? Use a system of equations to solve.

Answer:

100 - 80 = 20

So 20lbs of turkey was eaten by kids, which means 60lbs was eaten by the adults

20 × 2 = 40

There are 40 kids

60 × 1 = 60

There are 60 adults

The number of adults and children who attended the dinner is 60 and 40 respectively.

How many adults and how many children attended the dinner?

Let

Number of adults = x

Number of children = y

x + y = 100. (1)

x + 1/2y = 80. (2)

Subtract (2) from (1)

y - 1/2y = 100 - 80

1/2y = 20

Divide both sides by 1/2

y = 20 ÷ 1/2

y = 20 × 2/1

y = 40

Substitute y into (1)

x + y = 100

x + 40 = 100

x = 100 - 40

x = 60

Therefore, x equals 60 and y equals 40
