sum = addition

3x + 5 = 9

now balance equation, get numbers without x on same side. Subtract 5 from both sides, this will leave 3x on one side, and 9-5 on the other side.

3x/3 = 4/3

x=4/3

4/3 = 1.33

3 x 1.33 +5 = 9
