poner= put (this is a general translation but, of course, the most suitable one will completely depend on context. For example, "poner la mesa" would be translated as "set the table")

hacer: do/make (in this case, context is also essential for a proper translation. In Spanish, we tend to use "hacer" in almost any context while in English, the translation will vary more considerably. Eg: "hacer la tarea" = "do your homework"; "hacer la cena" = "make dinner".
