You want to buy a souvenir hat for $12.00. At the cash register, the sales clerk advises you that the total amount due, including tax, is $12.72. What is the sales tax (%) in this state?

In order to find out the the sales tax we first have to create a fraction which has the difference between the price with taxes and without taxes, as its numerator, and the price without taxes as its denominator. So we do...


(12.72-12.00)/(12.00) = (1272 - 1200)/(1200) = (72)/(1200) = (3)/(50)

Now we just have to find a fraction with the same value but with a denominator being 100. So in out case we do....


(3)/(50) = ((3)(2))/((50)(2)) = (6)/(100)

Since we know that 1% is equal to
(1)/(100) we know that
(6)/(100) also means 6%. Therefore the answer is 6%
