PASSAGE 54
I was a sunny Monday, 9th May, 2013 when I woke up during the mid-
terms. It was my birthday and everything seemed to be the same unlike
last year when I woke up and saw a big birthday cake on the table in the
Nobody seemed to be moved as though they had forgotten that it was my
birthday. My dad went to work without wishing me 'happy birthday' as
he used to do every year. But I didn't utter a word. My mum did the same
thing; in fact no one in the entire house wished me anything. I felt very
sad and bad thinking no one cared about me. Gradually, they all left and I
was the only one in the house.
None of my friends even called to wish me 'happy birthday', not even
my closest friends; Anita and Lorretta. My cousin, Ransford who
promised to be the first to call me did not even 'flash' me. I spent all day
thinking about the reason why no one bothered to say anything to me.
At about 8.00pm, my mum and dad returned from work and still said
nothing. I was about to go to my room when Dad said, “Ama go and buy
me a pencil" I was shocked because my dad never used pencil. When I
returned, the lights in our house were out. When I opened the door, the
lights came in and everyone shouted, "HAPPY BIRTHDAY !" I was so
stunned. Ransford and virtually all my friends were there. Only God
knows how my parents managed to organise them.
